Polycystic ovary syndrome is a very common condition among women which relates to a hormonal imbalance during the reproductive age. It is characterized by high levels of androgens in the body. Insulin may also be linked to PCOS as researchers have also found that women with high insulin in their bodies suffer from PCOS.
Due to high levels of insulin, ovaries produce more male hormones which in result leads to PCOS. It is also accompanied by various health issues, many of which directly affect infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, and elevated androgen levels. However, the exact cause of PCOS is still unknown, yet genetics is considered to be an important factor.
When the causes of PCOS can be many, the symptoms of PCOS may include:
- Deeper Voice
- Excess hair on the face, chest, stomach
- Hair Loss
- Decreased Breast Size
- Weight Gain
- Pelvic Pain
- Oily Skin
- High Blood Pressure
- Thinning hair
However, there is no cure for PCOS, it can be controlled just by adopting a few home remedies as Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS.
Columbia University researchers have found that cinnamon can improve menstrual cycle in women and treat PCOS. Take 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder and add it to a glass of hot water. Drink this on a daily basis for a few months or until you feel satisfied with the results.
Alternatively, you can also include cinnamon in your diet by sprinkling cinnamon powder on your cereal, cheese, yoghurt, peanut butter sandwich, oatmeal, etc.
Flaxseed helps in reducing the androgen levels which makes flaxseed an excellent Ayurvedic treatment for women. Packed with fibre, flaxseed decreases cholesterol levels and helps in slowing down glucose metabolism. It also helps in reducing inflammation, blood pressure, and the risk of chronic diseases.
Add 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed to a glass of water and consume it on a daily basis or till you start to feel better. You can also add flaxseed to your diet by blending it with smoothies, sprinkling it on soups and salads.
